Pioneer Elite PRO-111FD – Best of the Best, but Discontinued

If you’re not limited by a budget and you want the best plasma TV money can buy, Pioneer Kuro PRO-111FD is the absolute best. Its deep black levels and accurate colors cannot be contested. Noting comes close to this TV! It has a full array of picture controls but you are unlikely to use them as the PRO 111FD has perfect picture out of the box. Keep in mind that Pioneer exited the TV business and the PRO-111FD is now a discontinued plasma TV. If you manage to find it however, it is still the best HDTV out there.

Panasonic TC-P50V10 – Best Plasma TV of 2009

Last year, Pioneer Kuro and Elite were above Panasonic models in the top. Though Pioneer went out of the TV business and their models are now discontinued, Panasonic black levels don’t outperform those seen on Kuro plasma TVs. However, the overall picture quality and features of TC-P50V10 outperform those of Pioneer Kuro. If you want the best 50 inch plasma TV on the market, Panasonic TC-P50V10 is the one. The black levels are fantastic, a visible improvement over last year’s models. Color accuracy benefits from the set’s THX mode, and though Samsung top of the line models perform marginally better in this area, TC-P50V10 is overall superior as the overall experience is enhanced by the better black levels. In terms of feature, you get everything you might dream of – Internet connectivity through Viera Cast, 1080p/24, superb video processing, DLNA, etc. The only downside is the relatively high price, however if you want the best plasma TV out there, it is a price you have to pay.

Samsung PN50B650 50 inch Plasma TV

Samsung PN50B650 – One of the Best High-End Plasma TVs

Samsung PN50B650 is a plasma TV that manages to impress. Though Samsung was visibly behind Panasonic when it came to black levels, this year we can see the difference between them is marginal. PN50B650 has fantastic black levels, shadow detail is superb and overall the experience is significantly improved. Color accuracy is even better than on Panasonic TC-P50V10, though just a bit. Feature wise, this 50” plasma TV has everything one may expect from a high-end HDTV. You get Internet connectivity, 1080p/24 support and all the bells and whistles. Naturally, the price matches its quality and set of features and some will find it a bit high.

Pioneer Kuro PDP-5020FD 50 inch Plasma TV

Pioneer Kuro PDP-5020FD – Still One of the Best, but Discontinued

Pioneer Kuro PDP-5020FD, though discontinued and hard to find, remains the plasma TV with best black levels. We have dropped it on a lower position because overall it doesn’t match the above models. Though it has fantastic black levels, its color accuracy is inferior to that of the above models and the features it offers are not a match to them either.

Panasonic TC-P50G10 50 inch Plasma TV

Panasonic TC-P50G10 – Best Value for Money

If you want a better bang for the buck, Panasonic TC-P50G10 is the plasma TV to buy. This 50” plasma TV has a better price to quality ratio than the above models. You can go cheaper without sacrificing a lot in the quality department by buying the TC-P50S1, however TC-P50G10 offers better quality, the same as TC-P50V10, and makes sacrifices only in the features department. In other words, you get the same best-in-class black levels and superb colors (including THX mode) present in V10 model, but the number of features is smaller and because of that the price is more affordable.

Panasonic TC-P50S1 50 inch Plasma TV

Buy from Amazon.com

Panasonic TC-P50S1 – Very Good Mid-End Plasma TV

Panasonic TC-P50S1 is a mid-level plasma TV. You should however not make the mistake to consider this a cheap, low level TV. It is very close to the above models and very far from the budget ones, its quality being only marginally inferior to V10 and G10 plasma TVs. It is built on top of the new NeoPDP panel from 2009, and because of that it benefits from superb picture quality. The black levels are similar to those found on TC-P50V10 and TC-P50G10 and in the color accuracy arena, though it lacks THX certification it performs well. Overall, the picture quality though not the best, is superb. The number of features is significantly smaller, and this is the main reason why it is so affordable. However, if you don’t really need a bunch of features like Viera Cast and you are not a fan of 1080p/24, this 50 inch plasma TV offers the best price to quality ratio.

Samsung PN50B550 50 inch Plasma TV

Samsung PN50B550 – Very Good Mid-End Plasma TV

This is another mid-level plasma TV. It is a model that offers a good value overall, having a more affordable price than high-end models and featuring good picture quality. It is similar to the model from Samsung series 6, however it doesn’t have exactly the same picture quality and the feature set is more limited. If you do not have high demands however, the PN50B550 will give you a good picture at a more affordable price.

Panasonic TC-P50X1 50 inch Plasma TV

Buy from Amazon.com

Panasonic TC-P50X1 – Best Cheap Plasma TV (720p)

Panasonic TC-P50X1 is not in the same quality class as the above models. However, it is the best cheap plasma TV in the 50 inch size class. Aside from the fact that is a 720p plasma TV, it does not benefit from the new NeoPDP panel as its more expensive brothers. That means the black levels and color accuracy are not as good. The number of features is not impressive either, TC-P50X1 having just the basic ones. It does however offer an unbeatable price to quality ratio if you are looking for an inexpensive model. There are other budget plasma TVs out there, however TC-P50X1 is the best of them and the only TV in this class that we would consider including in a top of best plasma TVs.
